Panel 2 of our Vindication of Christmas exhibition looks at the early confrontations between local Puritans and Crayford’s rector Dr Thomas Vane who also held the position of Chaplain Extraordinaire to King Charles I. Vane’s close relationship to Queen Henrietta Maria and clashes with local Puritans like William Draper led to an attempt to remove him as Crayford’s rector in 1640. This coincided with Vane preparing princess Royal Mary Stuart for her marriage to Willem of Orange, Prince of Nassau at Somerset House.
