Panel 3 of our exhibition looks at events that took place locally during the First English Civil War between 1642 and 1646. Crayford’s proximity to London meant that it was firmly under the control of Parliament. However, Crayford, taking a lead from its two rectors during this period Dr Thomas Vane and Edward May, appeared to be populate by many Royalist sympathisers, including its blacksmith William Parry.

At its conclusion many members of the victorious Roundhead New Model Army objected to the restoration of the King and favoured greater democracy. These ideas were debated just before the Plum Pudding Riots at Putney in November 1647.
