CRAY volunteer Rachel Poku travelled with the group to the National Civil War Centre in Newark to interview Sophie Merrix, who is researching the story of Africans during the English Civil War period as part of her PhD at Lancaster University. CRAY were able to link up with Sophie using TEAMS on a big screen at the NCWC. Here is the interview
Sophie’s PhD project analyses the lives of Black Africans in Stuart England; a period that witnessed the emergence and growth of Britain’s trans-Atlantic slave trade alongside shifting racial ideologies. The research she has undertaken will reveal more of Britain’s multi-ethnic past. Her MA training has led her to offer a fresh perspective on early modern history through the use of ArcGIS mapping software.
