Panel 5 of the VOC exhibition deals with the events of the Second English Civil War in Kent. Anger with the repressive Puritan measures of Parliament at Christmas 1647 and the refusal to hear the Kent petition in May 1648 led to a Royalist uprising. This began with the New Model Army mustering at Crayford on 31st May, 1648, before clashes between them and Royalist rebels at Stonebridge, Northfleet, and at Maidstone on June 1st, 1648.

Kent's Puritan Committee leader was Sir Antony Weldon of Swanscombe. He had wanted to hang the Canterbury Christmas rebels but now found himself surrounded by Royalist rebels.
